What is the Worldbuilders Guild?

We are a group dedicated to collecting great artwork that will inspire worldbuilding. Our members are both artists who like to draw fantasy worlds and want to share their artwork, as well as writers who enjoy creating and writing about such worlds and benefit from viewing the great artwork.

What Is Worldbuilding?

Worldbuilding is the process of creating a fictional world, from drawing the world map right down to creating the civilizations and races that live in the world. It is most often undertaken by fantasy and sci-fi writers however, films and video games also feature worldbuilding especially if they are in the fantasy or sci-fi genre.

The degree of building that is done depends entirely upon the individual writer and their needs. Arguably the most famous world builder is J.R.R Tolkien.

Can I become a Guild Member?

Certainly, we’d love to have you join The Worldbuilders Guild. Though if you would like to submit your artwork then please only submit your best work as we like to keep a high standard to provide the greatest inspiration and quality possible.

Please don’t be offended if your art is rejected, we will try and tell you why your piece was rejected. However, most of the time it is due to the art being submitted to the featured folder rather than the relevant one.

If you're not a member or watcher yet then please join us :)

Submission Guideline

Please view the following article for our submission guidelines:
Worldbuilders Guild Submission GuideWelcome to The WBGuild and thank you for your interest in submitting your artwork to the guild. It is our mission to collect the greatest gallery of world building inspiration and I personally thank you for helping us.
So you’ve finished your artwork and now comes the exciting, and slightly scary, part of submitting it to groups and showing the world. No doubt there are a number of groups you need to submit to, each with their own unique way of doing things, but please do take a moment to read through this submission guide as it will help your artwork to be accepted faster – and so the views and favourites come quicker.
This guide is for both yourself and the guild moderators to determine what art can and should be submitted where; or rather, “Which folder should I submit X to?”
If you still have a question then you can contact one of the moderators and we will respond to your question as soon as possible.

Every world needs an ecosystem of creatures to give it life and every adventurer needs monsters to fight. However, what we sometimes forget is to include the cute creatures that can inhabit a world. As a celebration of the amazing creature artists in our group I've collected 21 of my favourite cute creatures into an article.

These cute creatures could also make for a great pet or sidekick for your main character – they may even warrant a whole story of their own.

You can view all of the 21 creatures here with links back to the full image on DA.
Hello WBGuild,

I hope you're all well and getting excited for the Christmas season?

If you've visited the group page recently then you'll have seen that we now have over 1000 watchers! This is great news and a real testament to the Worldbuilding community on DA and the hard work of the group mods and all of the great artists who have submitted their work to the WBGuild.

I'd like to say a big thank you to Erich and Andrew who joined near the beginning of the year to help me serve you all as moderators for the group. We do consider it an honour to guide this group and curate great Worldbuilding inspiration on DA.

I'm really looking forward to the future of the group and for ways we can better server the DA Worldbuilding community in 2014. Also The WBSchool is undergoing updates due to launch in 2014 so I will keep you updated with them as they happen. Though the first thing will be a new site design so you'll be able to read the articles on mobile devices easier.

Finally I've added a link to the group submission guidelines on our homepage as we've realised they haven't been all that easy to find up until now. So if you're a new member or watcher and haven't seen them before then please click on the thumbnail below and take a quick read. Or if you're a long time member it's always good to refresh your memory.

I hope you're all having a great week? Feel free to leave a comment and say hello, introduce yourself or even let us know what you're doing over the Christmas holidays.

All the best,

Nate
You may have seen this video wandering around the web but it's quite simply brilliant.

I won't say much on it as really you need to watch the video. What I will say tho is the video is done by John McWhorter and it has a really beautiful animation.

Click on this link to watch the video.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I had a piece come into my messages a while ago from one of the groups I follow and I can't find it again. It was a world building piece about a system of magic so I have to assume it came from here. Having no luck finding it, I'm hoping you all might recognize this description: the piece was several paragraphs long about a conjuring/spirit school of magic. Next to the paragraphs was a drawing of a particular user of that kind of magic. This user had merged themselves with a spirit and looked part human, part creature. The paragraphs covered a history of that magic, who peoples typically used it, and a famous user of it. This artist created similar pieces for other schools, like aura generation or telekinesis. Any help would be appreciated.

hi, I was wondering if anyone has some tips for naming a species, I'm sort of stuck and can't seem to come up with a good name for one of mine. The species is a medium to large intelligent feline that has elemental magic.
thanks for any help you can offer :)

Any tips and advice for creating a whole world? Admittedly I am new to DnD, I am really wanting to do a fully custom world for my first few campaigns, so any help would be useful :3

Also I am looking to form my first group, so if anyone is looking for new players for their group or wants to join me in forming a new group then I am open

One of the most important things to consider when worldbuilding is that any change in geography and geology can result in profound changes in environment and climate. I've been searching Google for any climate forums, only to find their premise to be our current climate change crisis.

Does anyone in this group know any climate-based forums on-line (other than Reddit) that don't focus on our current climate change crisis and allow hard science on speculative climatic patterns?

I've just notice you have a folder for virtually everything, except Culture.  Think a folder for culture would be of use?  Its quite a distinct part of world building to me.

Characters, armor design, weapons/tools, flags and writing are already subsets of Culture. We'd rather not add a generic "Culture" folder.

What about a place to show clothing, as that isn't armor.  As an artist, I would rather draw my culture then write about it.  What place would I submit art of the sort of 'cattle barons' that I have on my world?
